Contrails

I still get surprised by things in China, or how Chinese react to things.

Here in Xining, we rarely have aircraft flying over the city, except for those just taking off or landing. One day, while out on the streets, I noticed people stopping and looking up at an airplane flying high overhead with contrails streaming behind it. I thought it was a little strange but didn’t pay much attention to it.

A week or two later, I was teaching an English class, when my students started talking and looking up out of the window. I went to see what they were looking at, and found another plane with contrails following behind. I then looked down at the street, and sure enough, people had stopped walking, and were looking up. A couple of people were even taking pictures with their phones.

When you’re not used to seeing something, I guess even what most folks would consider everyday happenings, seems strange to you.
