I first noticed it in Hong Kong 14 years ago. They would turn on the heat, then open the door to cool the place off.
Yesterday, my classroom was very comfortable on a very cold day. That is, until the students decided to open the window during the break. I came back in, and the classroom was freezing.
I walked in at the beginning of another class, and they also had the window open. When I closed they window, the students said, “It’s too hot.” I said, “Take off your coat.” They’re response? “Oh, yeah, I guess I could. Never thought of that before.”
I sometimes get into a taxi, when the temp is in the 20’s F, and they don’t have the heater on. When I ask them to please turn it on, the driver asks, “Are you cold?” Kinda.
Even my dear Chinese wife doesn’t understand this bit of Chinese culture.
I’m used to this clash, but it still can be frustrating when I’m all nice and comfortable, to have a sudden temperature drop.
Oh, well.
